School supply shopping is easier to manage when you know what you need, what you already own, and how much you can spend. Use these practical steps to keep costs under control.
1. Start with your school’s list
Use the latest list from your child’s school or teacher. Check required quantities, notebook sizes, pencil types, and calculator models before buying. A cheaper item is only useful if it meets the requirements.
2. Check supplies you already have
Look through backpacks, drawers, and last year’s supplies. Keep usable rulers, pencil cases, folders, scissors, and other items. Cross these off your shopping list before placing an order.
3. Set a spending limit
Separate essential purchases from optional extras. Give priority to the items needed for the first day of school, and leave room in your budget for replacements during the year.
Use our Budget Calculator as a planning starting point. Its figures are estimates, so check actual retailer prices before purchasing.
4. Compare equivalent products
Check the brand, model, size, materials, and pack quantity when comparing offers. A single notebook and a five-pack should not be compared using the package price alone.
For example, a hypothetical pack of 12 pencils costing $3 has a unit price of $0.25 per pencil. A pack of 24 costing $4.80 costs $0.20 per pencil. The larger pack offers a lower unit price, provided you need the extra pencils.
5. Include delivery and other charges
Compare the final checkout total, including delivery, applicable taxes, and discounts. Splitting an order across several stores may cost more once delivery charges are included.
6. Buy larger packs only when useful
Multipacks can make sense for frequently used supplies. Consider sharing a pack with another family when the quantities exceed your needs. Avoid buying extras simply to qualify for a promotion.
7. Balance price with durability
Consider how long an item needs to last. Check backpack stitching, binder rings, lunch-box closures, and other features that affect everyday use. Replacing an unsuitable item can cancel out the initial saving.
